With the new year just beginning, the topic of many articles this month has to do with one of two things—setting goals for the year or adopting a plan for a healthier lifestyle. If you have one or both of these on your list for the new year, I say Good for You!
Rather than follow suit, I want to branch off a bit from the norm. Yes, it is important to set goals and work toward accomplishing them throughout the year. I’ve written numerous articles on the subject myself and shared my best tips with you in previous years. Today, I want to talk about Success—the reward for accomplishing goals. What does it take to be a success in your career and in life?
Thinking through it, I’ve come up with what I call the ABCs of Success! Three little words or attitudes that will help you better serve your clients or accomplish your own goals for the year. Developing these attitudes or philosophies allows you to create the right mindset to move forward in a positive way and make great things happen this year! And, sharing these with your clients will help them on their journeys as well.
A is for Adaptability. This is so important. As you begin the year with your goals in place, and you’re ready to serve your clients, enhance your skills, or go for that big promotion, be adaptable. Let’s face it. Things don’t always go as planned. Life throws us curve balls but we have to stay focused and be ready to adapt. Envision the bigger picture and keep working toward that, even when you encounter a detour here and there. This is an important message to share with your clients as well. A job that may not look just right on the surface may very well be a good starting point for a better position within the company. Help your clients to look for potential growth rather than limiting themselves by looking for the “ideal job” going in. A solid career path is built of many stones; don’t be too quick to disregard them.
B is for Brilliance. We all have a brilliance that is unique to each of us. Your brilliance may come from your ability to easily relate to your clients, your passion for organization, or your knack for engaging others as a team. Look for your brilliance and be sure to let it shine as you go through your day. And, as you counsel your clients, help them to find their own brilliance and learn how to highlight that to prospective employers!
C is for Confidence. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Dance like nobody’s watching.” It’s confidence that allows you to do this! Develop a sense of confidence that lets you guide your clients down the path that will bring them the most success in their job search. Your clients rely on you to walk their journey with them. They don’t always have the confidence they need, and they look to you to help develop that strength. Just as you offer skills and knowledge in a way that is different from everyone else in your own job, helping your clients have that sense of self-assurance is one of the greatest services you can offer them!
While the ABCs of Success are directed primarily to your work life, you can easily apply them to all areas of your life, including adopting that healthier lifestyle. I wish you much success this year as you practice your ABCs!
